Background: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has altered diagnostic imaging in dentistry, providing clinicians with an exceedingly comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) assessment of the craniofacial area. This paper presents a wide-ranging literature review of CBCT’s clinical applications in dentistry.
Methods and Results: An electronic literature search was conducted through the PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus databases to identify articles in English using the keywords "cone-beam computed tomography," "CBCT applications in dentistry," "advantages of CBCT over conventional radiography," "CBCT in endodontics," and "diagnosis and management of endodontic problems," covering the period from March 2000 to April 2024. The articles were selected by reviewing the titles and abstracts of those containing the term "CBCT in dentistry.”
Cone-beam computed tomography has become a useful adjunct in diagnosing and assessing the management of dentoalveolar injuries, particularly horizontal root fractures. Cone-beam computed tomography enables navigation of 3D structures in traditional and alternative volumetric planes, enhancing sensitivity for accurately detecting endodontic pathologies and conditions. CBCT technology provides clear images of structures such as nerves and bones that avoid overlapping with other anatomical features. The advanced imaging abilities of CBCT benefit implant procedures by allowing accurate preparation and evaluation of anatomical structures, bone density, and possible issues. As technology progresses, incorporating CBCT into treatment approaches holds the potential to boost precision and enhance results in implant dentistry.
